In the northeast,
cases of poor children
with cancer are taken care of by NGO's, but the number
of patients admitted is still limited due to lack of
funds. In Bahma, GACC (www.gaccbahia.org.br) has been
doing outstanding work for years, with the goal of
giving a better future for these children. |

Intrapulso (forced
entry) is the name of the favela (illegal human settlement) where
this boy lives, in Recife. This favela has the "inconvenient"
of being too close to the biggest shopping center in Brazil. For this
reason, many wealthy businessmen are trying to force these people
out. CENDHEC is an ngo fighting against this and is working to defend
these people's right to a home. |

Even though the
poorest regions of Brazil
are still the rural areas, disorderly urban growth has
resulted in a great concentration of poor families
living in "favelas" (irregular settlements) inside the
big cities. 80% of Brazilians live today in urban
areas. |

words from the photographer |
| |
Many
people have criticized
me for showing only "the ugly side of things", but I'm only
capturing a situation that exists, that is very real. I believe that
a photograph can touch someone's heart, change points of view, make
a difference. And as I heard Bono say once: "I cannot change
the world, but WE can". |
